Workshop about Family Violence for Local Businesses

The businesses and organizationsindex of northeastern Manitoba are invited to participate in a Workplace Initiative to Support Employees (WISE) on Family Violence workshop. This workshop was developed by the Manitoba government to help employers and co-workers recognize and respond to the signs of family violence in the workplace.

Unfortunately, too many Manitoba families are affected by family violence. According to Statistics Canada, 7.4 per cent of Manitobans (48,000 persons) reported having experienced spousal violence in the past five years.

The effects of family violence can often spill over into the workplace through reduced productivity, increased absenteeism, decreased morale, strained relations between coworkers, and potential liability issues if someone is harmed in the workplace. The Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters says that family violence is the “fastest growing type of workplace violence.”

Survivor’s Hope is hosting this workshop free of charge because we wanted to make sure that all small businesses in the northeast had the opportunity to access such a great training resource. Family violence can have a huge impact on a small business so we decided to host this training as a way of helping our local economy and supporting our local families.

There will be two identical workshops: one in Lac du Bonnet and one in Beausejour. The WISE workshop in Lac du Bonnet will take place on March 17 from 1 pm – 4:30 pm at the Lac du Bonnet Community Centre. The WISE workshop in Beausejour will take place on March 26 from 1 pm – 4:30 pm at the Sun Gro Centre. Space is limited so please register as soon as possible by calling Stephanie at (204)753-5353 or email stephanie@survivors-hope.ca.
